Project narrative

On May 5, 2018, Chinese and German officials unveiled a statue of Karl Marx in the city of Trier, Marx's birthplace. In attendance were Guo Weimin, deputy director of the State Council Information Office of China, and Malu Dreyer, governor of the Rhineland-Palatinate. The unveiling was also picketed by protestors. The statue was made by artist Wu Weishan, director of the National Museum of China. The statue is made of bronze and has a height of 5.5 meters and a weight of 2.3 metric tons. A model of the statue was showcased in Trier in March 2017. The design of the statue was approved by Trier's city council in April 2017.
