Project narrative

On March 24, 2016, the Library of the University of Edinburgh announced the purchase of the entire Shen Bao Digital Archive with assistance from the Confucius Institute for Scotland located at the university. Published in Shanghai from 1872-1949, the Shen Bao Chinese Newspaper (申報) Digital Archive presents the complete collection of all issues and contains more than 2 million articles. The database is 100% full-text searchable and contains the full-image of each page. The newspaper is described as the most influential and longest lasting commercial newspaper before the establishment of the People’s Republic in 1949.
