Project narrative

On July 5, 2020, it was announced that the Chinese Embassy in Harare had pledged to donate 30,000 COVID-19 test kits to Zimbabwe. On July 12, 2020, the shipment of 30,000 PCR testing kits, used for diagnosis of COVID-19, arrived in Harare, Zimbabwe. The Acting Minister of Health and Child Care, Professor Amon Murwira received the 1,250 kits each containing 24 tests at R.G Mugabe International Airport prior to the official donation ceremony at the Presidential Palace. On July 21, 2020, a ceremony was held for the donation of anti-epidemic materials from the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe to the Zimbabwe government. The ceremony was held at the Presidential Palace. China’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Guo Shaochun, attended the ceremony and handed over the supplies to President Mnangagwa, the President and First Secretary of Zimbabwe's ruling Democratic League. The donated supplies included 30,000 testing kits, 220,000 surgical masks and 40,000 medical gloves. Zimbabwe's Vice President, the head of the Zimbabwe Anti-epidemic Working Group, the NLD National Chairman and Defense Minister, and the NLD's Acting Administrative Affairs Secretary also attended the ceremony. During the ceremony, Zimbabwe’s Vice President gave a brief speech thanking the Chinese government and the Communist Party of China for their donation to Zimbabwe to fight the epidemic. Ambassador Guo Shaochun signed the material handover certificate with the Minister of Local Government of Zimbabwe and the Acting Secretary of Administrative Affairs of the Zimbabwe Democratic League Party. Representatives of the two sides also inspected the donated materials on site.
