Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On November 26, 2008, Shanghai Library and Dunedin Public Libraries (DPL) launched the Window of Shanghai [“上海之窗”] program with an initial donation of 201 books from Shanghai Library to DPL. In that year, the Shanghai Library donated the "Window of Shanghai" print books selected by the Dunedin Libraries for the first time. Among the first batch of 201 books from Shanghai Library, most are beautifully-illustrated literature for children, bilingual books on culture and those for history. Since "Window of Shanghai" program began, Shanghai Library has allocated books for the libraries each year. In 2013, the "Window of Shanghai" provided e-book services to the DPL. On February 24, 2022, Shanghai Library and Dunedin Public Libraries signed the Memorandum of Agreement for 2022-2024 in order to encourage and deepen the communications and cooperation in many fields, including the "Window of Shanghai" project, and promote the common progress of both libraries.

Staff comments

1. In 2003, "Window of Shanghai" was set up in libraries of the sister cities of Shanghai or via friendly agreements with other cities, as part of the “China Book International” project. It seeks to redress the limited Chinese language holdings in overseas libraries, and to provide overseas readers with more access to the latest Chinese publications.
