Project narrative

On September 20, 2019, the Government of Kiribati announced that it was severing diplomatic ties with the Republic of China (‘Taiwan’) and establishing diplomatic ties with the People’s Republic of China (‘China’). China’s Ambassador to Kiribati, Qian Bo, arrived in Kiribati on October 21, 2019. One day later, on October 22, 2019, Ambassador Qian Bo delivered a $250,000 cash grant to the Government of Kiribati to support the Te Runga National Championship Games, which were scheduled to open on November 2, 2019. Ambassador Qian Bo said at the handover ceremony that the the Chinese Government is very supportive to the development of sports in Kiribati as it builds up and promote healthy lifestyles to the people of Kiribati and in particular to members of the youths who are future leaders of the nation. The donation was reportedly to be equally shared among all islands with a share of $10,000 each; $5,000 to cover uniform and sport gear costs and $5,000 to support team rations.
