Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On or about April 20, 2020, the Government of Argentina received a donation of medical equipment from an unspecified unit of the Chinese Government. The donation consists of 21 mechanical fans, 5,000 protective suits, and 8,000 N95 masks. The estimated value of the donation is USD $342,000. On April 20, the National Ministry of Health proceeded to nationalize the donated supplies, which will further strengthen local capacities in the fight against COVID-19.

Staff comments

1. The currency is assumed to be US dollars, despite Argentine pesos also using the "$" symbol, insofar as (1) the word "dollars" is written out and (2) 342,000 Argentine pesos would make the donation worth significantly less than other donations with fewer and less expensive items donated (see Harvard's Mask Diplomacy Dataset, for example). 2. This donation is not captured by Harvard's Mask Diplomacy Dataset, nor the Wilson Center's dataset of US and China Aid.
