Project narrative

On July 29, 2020, the Chinese Ambassador, Hu Zhangliang handed over essentials to the Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Madam Manty Tarawalli. The items donated to the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs included, 3000 surgical face masks, 300 T-shirts, several caps, solar flashlights, pencil cases, and stationeries, school bags, raincoats, mosquito nets, and sewing machines. The donation was intended to promote the welfare of women and children and provide supplies to combat the COVID epidemic. The value of the goods was unspecified.

Staff comments

There is a discrepancy between sources as to when the commitment/completion date took place for the donation of the items. The Official Chinese Embassy article states the handover of the donations took place July 7, 2020 rather than July 29, 2020, which explains why the commitment and completion date is coded as so for both. Update 2023: The Xinhua article, Dow Jones Article, and official Chinese embassy source as well as all Sierra Leone media outlets state that the donation was done in honor of the forty-ninth anniversary of the commencement of diplomatic relations between Sierra Leone and China, which is July 29th. The commitment and completion dates have been changed to July 29th, 2020. AidData has estimated the transaction amount for this donation based on price catalogues from the World Health Organization (WHO). Please see the TUFF Methodology for additional details.
