Project narrative
In June 2001, the city of Guangzhou gifted a replica of a Western Han Dynasty Bell to its sister city of Vancouver. The bell was located in Shanghai Valley in Vancouver's Chinatown and was a commemoration of the relationship's fifteenth anniversary. This bell was a replica of the Yong Bell, a bronze percussion instrument that was excavated in downtown Guangzhou in 1983. The complete set of Yong Bells consists of five pieces all of the same shape and design but graduated sizes. The set was unearthed in the east chamber of the mausoleum of Zhao Mei who was one of the kings of the Nanyue Kingdom. In Guangzhou, the bell archaeologically confirms the establishment of the first-ever urban settlement in the Pearl River Delta area, while closer to home it symbolizes the origins of Vancouver’s Chinese community.
