Project narrative

At some point in 2012, CNOOC Canada Inc., a subsidiary of the state-owned China National Offshore Oil Corp. Ltd. (CNOOC), donated CAD 150,000 to the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary. The donation reportedly created five CAD 10,000 scholarships for students at the school.

Staff comments

1. This donation is assumed to have been in Canadian dollars due to the lack of specification in the sources, which are Canadian in origin. 2. Both sources describe a donation of CAD 150,000 but the creation of only five CAD 10,000 scholarships. The destination of the remaining reported CAD 100,000 is unclear. 3. The origin and status of "CNOOC Canada Inc." is unclear, as this event reportedly occurred before the 2013 acquisition of Canada-based Nexen by CNOOC Limited, which was subsequently rebranded "CNOOC Petroleum North America". For now, the assumption is that CNOOC Canada Inc. was some CNOOC-owned vehicle used for the company's Canadian interests before the acquisition of Nexen.
