Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

In 2021, an unspecified Chinese government institution granted MVR 20,000,000 to the Maldives for the for the maintenance of the Sinamalé (Male-Hulhule) Bridge. According to the 2021 Budget in Statistics Handbook by the Ministry of Finance of the Maldives, a grant for 2023 will also be issued. The money went to the Ministry of Housing, Planning, and Infrastructure according to the budget report. The specifics of the grant are unknown. This bridge was completed in 2018, and originally named the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge because much of its funding came from the Chinese government (see projects #38082 and #38037 for more information). According to news reports, the CCCC Second Harbor Engineering Company is responsible for the maintenance of the bridge for seven years following its completion.
