Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On November 15, 2010, then-Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping announced the construction of an $44 million SGD Chinese Cultural Centre in Singapore at a groundbreaking ceremony with Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong. The eleven-story building was designed by architect Liu Thai Ker, including a library, exhibit space, classrooms, and a multi-purpose hall suitable for large events. The building serves to facilitate cultural exchange between China and Singapore, especially Singapore's sizable ethnic Chinese population, with collaborations between the Centre and local organizations and museums in Singapore being planned for the Centre. The Chinese Cultural Centre opened to the public on November 7, 2015 after a ceremony with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Senior Minister Emeritus Goh Chok Tong. At the time of the building's opening, it was one of over 20 similar "cultural centres" constructed by the Chinese government in different countries.
