Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

In early May 2020, the Chinese Embassy, Anhui Jianghuai Horticultural Seeds Co., Ltd., and JHBiotech Costa Rica jointly donated 40,000 masks to Costa Rica's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in the agricultural sector. The Chinese government contributed an estimated 13,333 masks to the donation. Of the donated masks, 25,000 were subsequently distributed to farmers' fairs taking place in Desamparados, San Ramón, San Mateo, Orotina, Heredia. These were distributed the week of May 10 - 16, 2020. The remainder were to be distributed to unspecified locations the week of May 17 - 23, 2020. The Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) provided logistical support for acquiring the donation, as well as quality verification.

Staff comments

1. Insofar as the number of masks donated by each financier is unknown, AidData has implemented the equal contribution assumption by dividing the total number of masks donated (40,000) by the number of donors (3). Therefore, the estimated contribution of the Chinese government is 13,333 masks. 2. Because the Chinese government, Anhui Jianghuai Horticultural Seeds Co., Ltd., and JHBiotech Costa Rica all contributed an unknown number of supplies to this donation, AidData assumes each donor made an equal contribution. The total value of the donation is estimated to be $12,000, with each donor contributing USD 4,000 (USD 12,000 / 3 known contributors = USD 4,000).
