In 2020, the Chinese Government provided an 10 million grant to the Government of Tonga for the Mala'ekula Royal Tomb Upgrade Project. Then, in June 2022, the two government signed an 'Agreement for the Peripheral Area of Mala'ekula Royal Tomb Improvement Project’. As of late 2022, there was evidence that the project had commenced.
