Project narrative

In 2021 and 2022, the Chinese Government donated approximately 5.565 million Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine doses to Tanzania. On July 31, 2021, the Chinese Government delivered a batch of Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine doses and syringes to Tanzania’s Zanzibar Revolutionary Government (see AidData Record ID #92844). The number of vaccine doses and syringes that were donated is unknown. Zanzibar Trade and Industrial Development Minister Omar Shaban and Chinese Consul General in Zanzibar Zhang Zhisheng attended the handover ceremony at the airport. On October 8, 2021, the Chinese Government delivered 1,065,500 donated Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine doses to the Government of Tanzania (see AidData Record ID #92778). The package arrived at the Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The Tanzanian government held a grand welcoming ceremony at Julius Nyerere International Airport on the same day. Minister Counselor Xu Chen of the Chinese Embassy in Tanzania, Minister of Health Guajima of Tanzania, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sokoyne of Tanzania and other government officials, UN Resident Coordinator Milisik, heads of diplomatic missions in Tanzania and diplomatic envoys from many countries in Tanzania attended the event. On November 1, 2021, the Chinese Government delivered 500,000 donated doses of Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccines to the Government of Tanzania (see AidData Record ID #92824). A handover ceremony took place in Dar es Salaam at the Julius Nyerere Airport. Chinese Ambassador Chen Mingjian, Minister of Health Dr. Guajima, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health of Tanzania Macubi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tanzania Sokoin attended the ceremony. On January 26, 2022, the Chinese Government delivered 800,000 donated Sinopharm vaccine doses to the Government of Tanzania (see AidData Record ID #95625). Two days later, on January 28, 2022, the Chinese Government delivered 200,000 donated Sinovac COVID-19 doses to Tanzania’s Zanzibar Revolutionary Government (see AidData Record ID #95626). The vaccines were handed over to a Representative of the Zanzibar Revolutionary Government, Minister for Education and Vocational Training Simai Mohammed Said, by the Chinese Consul General in Zanzibar Zhang Zhisheng at the Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. On July 14, 2022, the Chinese Government delivered 3 million donated doses of Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccines to the Government of Tanzania (see AidData Record ID #95624). Chu Kun, Economic and Commercial Counselor in the Chinese Embassy in Tanzania and the Director of Preventive Services in the Ministry of Health, Beatrice Mutayoba, attended the handover ceremony at the Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam.

As such, AidData has estimated the monetary value of the July 14, 2022 donation as $54 million.
