Project narrative

On December 6, 2021, the Government of China allocated 7.68 billion rupees as a grant to completely renovate the Supreme Court complex where the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal are currently located. The project was implemented under the patronage of Justice Minister Ali Sabri. On July 31, 2023, the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka and the Sri Lankan Ministry of Justice held a groundbreaking ceremony for the renovation project in Colombo. According to a media report, the renovation will be carried out in two phases over a period of 32 months, with the first phase to renovate the Court of Appeal and the second phase to renovate the High Court. All renovation activities are scheduled to be completed on October 12, 2025 (Source ID #216719). The agreement was signed between the Secretary to the Ministry of Justice Priyantha Mayadunne and the Chinese Economic and Commercial Affairs adviser LI Guangjun. Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong was also present on the occasion.
