Project narrative

On July 22, 2005, the Chinese Government donated a statue of Mencius to Ritsumeikan University in commemoration of the opening of the Ritsumeikan Confucius Institute. The marble statue is about 2.9 meters high, weighs about 1.8 tons, and was installed in the university library. The statue was created in a workshop in Shandong Province using stone from Shandong Province, where Mencius was from. On July 22, 2005, the statue was officially dedicated in a ceremony attended by Wang Yi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to Japan. The statue commemoration ceremony coincided with ceremonies marking the opening of the Ritsumeikan Confucius Institute.
