Project narrative

On February 2, 2021, the Fujian Provincial Government donated a 2.5 ton "World Peace Bell" to the Kofukuji Buddhist Temple in Nagasaki to commemorate China-Japan friendship. The bell has a diameter of 1,231 cm and a height of 1972 cm. 1972 is the year of the normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations. The bell was designed by Wanfu Temple in Fujian, a Buddhist temple on Mount Huangbo in Fuqing in China's Fujian Province. The installation of the bell was completed on February 25, 2021. Kofukuji Temple is the oldest and one of the most important Chinese-founded temples in Nagasaki. It had been without a bell since 1940. On November 14, 2021, a ceremony was held to commemorate the temple's 400th anniversary and dedicate the bell. The event was attended by Zhang Daxing, the Chinese Consul General in Nagasaki. The financial value of the bell is unknown.
