Project narrative

In February 2006, Chinese Ambassador to South Africa Guijin Liu presented more than 500 books donated by the Chinese Government to the Cape Peninsula University of Technology’s (CPUT) library in Cape Town, South Africa. The books, written in both Mandarin and English, included dictionaries, storybooks, profiles of Chinese cities and towns, and a wide range of other topics. During the handover, Ambassador Liu highlighted China’s commitment to strengthening educational and cultural ties with South Africa, announcing that the Chinese Government intended to build 100 schools in impoverished areas and noting that over 3,000 Chinese students were studying at South African universities. CPUT’s Interim Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Marcus Balintulo, praised the donation as a “wonderful gesture” that reinforced long-standing ties between the two countries.
