Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

On December 14, 2019, a ceremony was held to unveil the latest Luban Workshop, which was jointly built by Tianjin City Vocational College, Chinese telecommunications leader Huawei (Record ID#98253), and Machakos University in response to a pledge made by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing on September 3, 2018. The Kenya Luban Workshop is the second built by Tianjin on the African continent. It is aimed at nurturing high-end talents for the country in the field of information communication technology (ICT) and creating a new chapter in which the two countries can further strengthen their bilateral cooperation in vocational education and deepen people-to-people exchange in the years to come. The workshop has been divided into four sections: cloud-network integration, big data, intelligent city, and online class.

Staff comments

1. Luban Workshop (鲁班工坊) is a technical assistance program started by Tianjin's Vocational Institute in BRI countries. While it is an important Chinese foreign policy objective, the workshop is not funded through a specific fund or a government entity. Instead, it is heavily dependent on each project. While the Chinese government may directly fund some projects, Chinese SOEs or the specific vocational schools in Tianjin may fund others. As a result, AidData assumes an unspecified Chinese government agency has funded the project.
