On September 6, 2022, Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhenhong and his wife went to Eastern University in Sri Lanka to attend the award ceremony for the Chinese Ambassador Scholarship. At this ceremony, approximately LKR 4.3 million was awarded to 150 students of low income coming from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. The money will be used to allow the students to continue their studies at Eastern University for another year, with each student receiving LKR 50,000 per annum. Attending the ceremony were Zhang Yingbao, Cultural Counselor of the Embassy, Luo Chong, Director of the Political Section, Professor Kanagasingam, Executive Vice President of Eastern University, deans of departments, students and parent representatives. During his speech, the ambassador highlighted the deep friendship between the two countries and China's willingness to assist Sri Lanka during its current difficulties. He also wished the students the best during the coming academic year.
