Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

In or around 2017, Beihang University (formerly and sometimes still referred to as Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (BUAA), a Chinese public university tied to the People's Liberation Army Air Force, donated a high-definition satellite imagery map of Greenland to the Government of Greenland. This map was of higher-definition than any one the government possessed due to its lack of satellite imagery access and was expected to help it measure the impact of climate change on the country.

Staff comments

1. The exact donation date is unclear. However, in the context of "Pole Position", this donation is mentioned after a remark about an article in 2016 and then change in U.S. policy in 2018, suggesting that the donation was made in or around 2017. AidData has coded 2017 as the commitment, start and end implementation dates, and marked the commitment_date_estimated? field as True.
