Project narrative

In February 2007, Ningbo Municipal Government donated stone statues of “Bureaucrat and Warrior” to the Italian city of Florence. The Vice Mayor of Ningbo and the Vice Chairman of Ningbo CPPCC discussed the proposal with Florence local government during their respective visits to Florence in April and December. The donation was in response to a gift from Florence to Ningbo in October 2006 that was intended to promote trade relations, a bronze reproduction of Michelangelo’s David, which was well-received by Ningbo. Florence officials struggled to find a place to put the Chinese statues, as city residents found them aesthetically unappealing. The statues, which are 13 feet tall and weigh four tons each, were housed in a freight warehouse for months after they arrived, until delegation from Ningbo decided to visit Florence in September 2008 to inspect the statues, which caused Florence officials to rush to find a place to put them.
