Narrative

Full Description

Project narrative

In 2020, Hanban provided approximately GBP 500,000 in funding to the Confucius Institute for Scotland’s Schools (CISS) to support its programming, including the funding of CISS "hub classrooms." Each of these classrooms, located in primary and secondary schools throughout Scotland, hosts at least one visiting teacher from their partner schools in Tianjin to facilitate the teaching of Chinese language and culture. Funding was not reduced in the 2020-2021 financial year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the expectation that any unspent monies could be carried forward to the 2021-22 financial year.

Staff comments

1. The Confucius Institute for Scotland’s Schools (CISS) is the first government initiated Confucius Institute in the UK, jointly established by the University of Strathclyde, Scotland’s National Centre for Languages, and the Tianjin Municipal Education Commission. It is administered through Education Scotland. 2. AidData assumes that Confucius Classroom Hubs do not receive funding directly from the Scottish Government or the Chinese Government. Instead, funds are disbursed through CISS.
